Timeline

Yesterday I created a timeline for our new idea. I marked every cut on the timeline and described in detail what we are thinking of shot wise.

The song is a bit to long for a music video so we decided to cut the last minute of it, so now it lasts 3 minutes and fifteen seconds.

In the first minute there is an keyboard and guitar intro. For the first thirty seconds we want to have establishing (drone) shots of the surrounding area of the mental hospital (woods) and then aerial shot of the hospital building (Peaslake house).
For the next twenty seconds we would like to introduce our mad character (Andy) being escorted to his padded cell in his patient coat. It is a fast paced part of the song so we wanted to have fast/jumping cuts between the character's crazy behaviour and him being escorted to the padded room.
Subsequently we would like to introduce the female (therapist) character, who would observe the patient's behaviour through CCTV cameras that are set in his cell.

At this point the lyrics starts, where we were thinking to present our band playing in the studio
(the singer, keyboard and guitar player).

From 01:21 to 01:38 we wanted to shot Andy doing his crazy things and looking at the CCTV cameras from time to time. We want to indicate that he is looking at the therapist and doing the mad stuff especially for her like he want to impress her.

Later on we would use fast cuts between the band playing in the studio and the girl in the viewing platform looking on Andy through monitors. In this part we want to show that the lady is being charmed by Andy's actions - she smiles to herself, writing positive aspects of his behaviour etc.

Subsequently we would like to show the therapist and Andy together.

Straight after that there would be shots of the studio and the band playing.

At the end of the song we would like to have the CCTV fats cuts of Andy's behaviour and two characters together - to finish with a 'happy ending'

New Idea!

Teddy recently came up with a concept for our new idea as we don't think we were going far with the 'Alice in Wonderland' style project.

The music video would take place in a padded room that are common in psychiatric hospitals.

We would have one character in this room, wearing a special white coat.

We would have another character - female that would be the patient's therapist.

The video would cut between the male character in a padded cell walking around, jumping, hitting the walls and lying crouched on the floor with the same character lip sync to the song with the patient with his therapist during the session. But the male character is falling in love with the female character and he is singing about this obsession.

Star image promoted across the the campaign

The star image of ZHU is going to be promoted with the digipack and website that we will create.
While researching ZHU I have noticed that he is an organic artist with a simple design when it comes to his album covers and logo - there are maximum two colours included and no other image or design. I started searching for another artists that have a similar design pattern/template as him so when we are creating the digipack and album cover we have some inspirations.

I think Flume has a similar style to ZHU - their range of colours does not vary a lot, they have little writing on the album cover and the design is quite humble.

A-trak is using more artistic patterns and images on his products and website but It is still simplistic using maximum three objects. I like the creative letters on one of his album covers, since they add more originality to the product.
I wanted to include one more artist and his work as an example of what we are not aiming for.

Art design of Diplo's work is overloaded with various colours, patterns and images at once. This kind of design is a bit to much and it is quite disturbing, which we are not aiming for.

Pitching to Luke & his feedback

Today we pitched our idea to Luke, he gave us a honest feedback. He had few concerns when it come to the whole concept. At first he said that he hears 'Alice in Wonderland' theme every year and it never comes out to be what everyone planned and it is not longer an original and unique idea. He said that we need to add more action and depth to the concept, there is no bigger sense in this primary idea. He said that we need to make the characters do something, meet because of a purpose - some kind of a twist. We had a lot things in mind but they were blind concepts not detailed and boring.
He also said that we need to have lipsync included in the video.

Task for now is to think of more creative and detailed idea including action and lipsync. Together with Teddy we briefly discussed to drop the whole fairytail idea but still go with the eerie theme with disturbing editing, we are still keen on using the forest and making female the main character.

Treatment to our music video!

Music video treatment is a form of a document including basic information about the product - the inspiration, any moodboards, images that helps other people visualise what we have in mind. In our treatment we included a bit information about the song, the general concept, inspiration, contextual link and technical aspects.

Moodboard

Here is our Pinterest board that contains various images and key themes that outline our idea about the music video.
Teddy created a 'board' on Pinterest and subsequently he added me and Angelina so we can all add pictures that we think are accurate.

Chosen Song!

We have decided to go with 'Numb' by ZHU. We figured that this fast paced song will work with a nightmare style music video with disturbing mise-en-scene and fast cuts.

As one of our sets we were thinking about forest during the night. To possibly have a girl running through the woods completely lost and scared. From time to time she is stopping, looking around or to rest by the tree.

Everytime she stops and looks around we would have a shot of what she sees, which we were thinking could be a boy or two with animal masks on just standing in the distance not moving and looking at her. They would also play a part of the band. Therefore some shots would be of them standing away from her and singing but also when following her.
We came up with the idea of masks to add more mysterious atmosphere and to follow the theme of the forest.

Later on as our last set we would have the girl lying on the hospital bed in a bright room without any decorations and the guys would stand next to the bed preparing her to some sort of surgery (they are writing notes, drawing lines on her etc.) And these would be our last shots.

Video idea to 'Kamikaze'

We decided to split the song so each of us gets one song to came up with an basic concept of the video to it and subsequently we are going to choose the idea that we like the most and develop it to our actual project. Since I suggested to use song 'Kamikaze' I am supposed to think of an idea for its clip.

At the beginning of the song there is a small intro that lasts a bit more than 10 seconds and I was thinking to shoot a girl that walks in a forest/in a street at the evening at looks completely lost but does not show any expressions. I got my inspiration from the clip to Stay High by Tove Lo, I like the way they shot the whole clip, it looks a bit like fish eye camera but also it shows the girl for all times her emotions change constantly and I was imagining something like that switching with two other sets.

Also when it comes to the forest concept I was inspired by fragments from the music video for Without you by Spooky Black.

When it comes to the second set, whenever the 1st verse starts, I was thinking of a group of friends in a graffiti tunnel painting on the walls whatever they want.

It is noticeable that they are really close and that they are having fun with each other. They are teenagers but they act like kids - some of them painting, some of them playing with a ball etc. They would be wearing more like scruffy and old ripped clothing. This set would switch with the shots of the singer on the rooftop or some sort of abounded building.

Three initial ideas as a group!

We all decided to abondone our individual ideas and think of three new one that we would like together. At first we were all listening to different songs and discussing what genre our songs should be. Since me and Teddy had quite similar ideas and music taste we started brainstorming about the features of our music video and then we were searching for products that already exist to use them as an inspiration.

We aimed for song that have a really noticeable, strong beat and it's fast paced. With this in our head we started looking for a music videos for similar songs to get more ideas. I showed Teddy a video to song by Clams Casino - All I need, which is a really artistic and creative clip that inspired us. It's visual aspects like pink faded filter or fast, jumping cuts and disturbing atmosphere directed us more when it comes to general concept of our project.

After watching this video Teddy showed me a clip that has similar features to Clams Casino video. The song was called Disparate youth by Santigold. We didn't like the song itself but the clip was disturbing and creative, so exactly what we are aiming for.

These two examples have us a clear idea what we are going for at the moment. So we started looking for our three potential ideas when it comes to songs.
Teddy showed us really good song by ZHU called Numb, which is not a popular song since it came out two months ago. The very beginning of this song, which is really instrumental makes you want to listen to the song till the end. The rhythm is very ear catching. While we were discussing the song we came up with the expression that it is a futuristic song.

The second song that we decided to use as our potential idea is by MØ called Kamikaze. I know this song from the Nerve movie. It is also fast paced and quite a youthful track.

When it comes to the last choice we end up staying with Teddy's individual idea, which is Lisztomania by Pheonix. It differs from the rest of our ideas when it comes to the genre but it is also fast and quite positive.

New Group!

New Group! 'Just a three of us'
Today we were supposed to divide our class into three small groups of three.
In these groups we are going to work on our music videos.
I am in a group with Teddy and Angelina. Together with Teddy we do Photography as a subject. We are both skilled when it comes to Photoshop and general photography studio concepts, which will help us while creating our music video. Additionally we all have similar music taste.

AS JOURNEY

On our first lesson we created a little island, which was a representation of our AS year.

  • The little foot steps are representing a general path of our AS year.
  • The first object is a map because at the beginning of the year I did not know what media actually is. We were all getting to know each other and about the subject.
  • Later on there is a skull and flowers which represents ups and downs thought the year. For example coming up with an idea was a difficult task and then we struggled to make it to the final form, however the actual shooting was a good part in our journey - we were all prepared and we were all working together using amazing equipment.
  • At last there are two palm trees and me relaxing which represents the amazing feeling and satisfaction after exams before the summer! When we were all aware that we did big job and we gained huge knowledge about media studies.

Idea for a digipack and a homepage for Son Lux

Son Lux is an alternative artist. I think his is creating a general atmospere around his work. His songs, album covers and website design is giving me a feeling of really slow paced music a bit disturbing but on the other hand a little melancholic. Looking at his designs they are quite dark and simple mostly with one abstract on it. The picture below is an example of one of the album covers.

Looking at the rest of the album covers I have noticed that there are whether dark or light with some abstract image that is in geometrical shape - circles or lines.

Son Lux's music personally takes my back and allows me to go back to different memories. Therefore I was thinking about a simple single image on the cover that is thought provoking and connected to memories.

I was thinking about simple light outline of a an old picture, watch or a sky to be integrated in the a dark cover. I would not add any text to the cover since the previous albums did not have any.  It seems like everything is kept simple and focused on music only. When I saw the official website tehre are only albums showed and this is all there is together with links to social media.

I wanted to create a website which is going to be following similar concepts but I wanted to add something that would brighten the background a bit. I started thinking about something that looks like an geometrical abstarct but is already existant. I came up with an idea of a dark ackground with a blurry white or grey constellations.

Idea for a digipack and a homepage for Moby

Moby is a organic artist. He is very honest and natural when it comes to his work. Looking back at his all album covers I have noticed few patterns that are visible in every design.
In every album cover he uses repetetive features like blue, yellow, green , white colours, pictures, his face, 'Moby' sign and the title of the album. However he lates covers do not contain the picture of his face. It is only mostly a bright picture or a drawing.

My idea for a digipack would follow the latest pattern. I would like to use a realy simple picture mostly likely by Moby since he is a photograp
her and sometimes uses his own work like in 'innocents'. The picture would be dominated with white, blue and grey to make it delicate and simple.

I have noticed that the name of the album and 'Moby' sign are in different places everytime and in different sizes.

Therefore I was thinking about a reallu simple font and white colour to use for the name of the album and the artist.

I looked at the original website and noticed that it's really bright without any vivid colours, any pictutres or any patterns. On the top of the page there is a small design and the rest is completely white and font is a bit grey so it can differ from the rest.

When it comes to the website I would like to keep the general theme of the simplicity and use faded pictures by Moby and delicate, pastel colours mostly grey, blue, white and black.

My intentions are not to distract people from the actual work by using to much of a design.

I want the website to contain the most important information, use short sentences and be easy to use. Since Moby is an organic artists the work is the most important so I would like to emphesize only the information about the albums, concerts and photography.
